Engels dichter en criticus (Laleham in Middlesex 24 Dec. 1822 - Liverpool 15 Apr. 1888), zoon van den paedagoog Thomas Arnold, ontving zijn eerste opleiding te Winchester en te Rugby, studeerde vervolgens te Oxford, waar hij in 1843 door een gedicht, getiteld Cromwell, de Newdigate-prijs verwierf. Hij was 1847-’51 secretaris van lord Lansdowne en werd in 1851 inspecteur van het onderwijs.
In 1857 werd hij benoemd tot hoogleraar in de dichtkunde te Oxford, welke betrekking hij waarnam tot in 1867. In 1859 en 1860 volbracht hij op last der regering een reis door Frankrijk, Duitsland, Zwitserland en Nederland, ten einde er de toestand van het onderwijs na te gaan. Hij heeft een uitgebreid verslag van zijn bevindingen geleverd onder de titel The Popular Education of France, with Notices of that of Holland and Switzerland (1861). Nogmaals reisde hij op het vasteland in 1865 en schreef: Schools and Universities on the Continent (1868).Hoewel sommige van Matthew Arnold’s gedichten ook thans nog in wijde kring gelezen en gewaardeerd worden (bijv. The Scholar Gipsy, Thyrsis, The Forsaken Merman, Sohrab and Rustum, Tristram and Iseult), vooral om hun klassieke vormschoonheid, is zijn plaats in de Engelse letterkunde als criticus belangrijker.
