Engels classicus (Bristol 23 Juli 1869-Cambridge 26 Mei 1943), studeerde te Cambridge, doceerde van 1897-1901 Latijn aan de Queen’s University te Kingston (Canada), werd in 1901 „classical lecturer” aan St John’s College te Cambridge en in 1921 „public orator” aan deze universiteit. Hij was een voortreffelijk latinist, getuige zijn meesterlijke vertaling van A child’s garden of verses van R.
L.
