Engels toneeldichter (Hitching, in Hertford, 1559 - Londen 12 Mei 1634), studeerde te Oxford, verwierf te Londen de vriendschap van Marlowe, Ben Jonson en Essex, bekleedde onder Jacobus I een plaats aan het hof en vertaalde de gedichten van Homerus in het Engels (Ilias 1598, Odysee 1614). Zijn vertaling is knap, vurig werk, maar niet zo lenig van beweging als het oorspronkelijke.
