Amerikaans schrijver (Germantown, Penn., 10 Nov. 1852 - Avalon 10 Apr. 1933), ontving zijn opleiding te Brooklyn (Polytechnic Institute) en aan de universiteit van Princeton (New Jersey) en Berlijn. In 1879 werd hij predikant bij de Presbyterianen te Newport, Rhode Island; in 1883 bij die te New York.
