Sir, Engels classicus (Dundee 27 Aug. 1841 - Cambridge 9 Dec. 1905), was van 1875-1889 hoogleraar in het Grieks te Glasgow, daarna te Cambridge, was medeoprichter van de Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies (1879), de British School at Athens (1887) en de British Academy (1902). Zijn hoofdwerk is de volledige uitgave met prozavertaling van Sophocles in 7 din (1887-1896).
