Schots filoloog en dichter (Glasgow 28 Juli 1809 - Edinburgh 2 Mrt 1895), bezocht de hogescholen te Aberdeen en te Edinburgh, studeerde van 1829-1830 te Göttingen en Berlijn en bereisde daarna Italië. In 1841 werd hij hoogleraar in de Latijnse taal aan het Marischall College te Aberdeen, in 1852 verkreeg hij het professoraat in de Griekse taal aan de universiteit te Edinburgh.
Bibl.: een vertaling van Aeschylus (2 dln, 1850) en Homer and the Iliad (4 dln, 1866). Van zijn vertalingen en gedichten: de vertaling van Goethe’s Faust (1834), Lays and Legends of Ancient Greece with Other Poems (1857); Lyrical Poems, English and Latin (1860) en Musa Burschicosa: a Book of Songs for Students (1869). Zijn Schots patriotisme blijkt uit zijn Language and Literature of the Scottish Highlands (1876).
