Anglicaans letterkundige (Aldwinkle 19 Juni 1608 - Covent Garden 16 Aug. 1661), was royalist, maar vond ook bij de Puriteinen grote waardering voor zijn essayistische arbeid. Deze kenmerkt zich door de didactische strekking, een grote dosis gezond verstand en een natuurlijke geestigheid.
Zijn omvangrijk en zeer gevarieerd werk (karakterschetsen, geschiedenis, aardrijkskunde, stichtelijke lectuur) toont tevens een grote belezenheid.
