Engels Assyrioloog van Amerikaanse origine (Monroe, Michigan, 8 Mei 1876-Oxford 19 Mei 1937), belangrijk vooral door zijn talrijke publicaties en bewerkingen van oorkonden in spijkerschrift en ook als leider van de eerste opgravingscampagnes in Kisj, werd in 1908 lector (reader) en in 1919 hoogleraar in Oxford (Jesus College).
