Engels filoloog en letterkundige (Staxton, Yorkshire, 12 Nov. 1874 - Swansea 23 Apr. 1942), ontving zijn opleiding aan de Grocers’ Company’s School te Londen en Univ. Coll.
Londen, was daar jarenlang bibliothecaris en Assistant Professor, maakte vooral studie van de oudere taal- en letterkunde en later van Thomas More en Shakespeare. Hij verzorgde tal van uitgaven, ook voor de Early Eng. Text Soc.Bibl.: o.a. Beowulf. An Introduction to the Study of the Poem, with a Discussion of the Stories of Offa and Finn (C.U.P. 1921); England before the Norman Conquest (1926); Thomas More (1935); Man’s Unconquerable Mind (1939); Poets and their Critics (1942).
