Noordamerikaans paedagoog (Elizabeth, New Jersey, 2 Apr. 1862 - New York 8 Dec. 1947), werd in 1889 hoogleraar in wijsbegeerte en paedagogiek aan de Columbia Universiteit te New York; sinds 1901 was hij president dezer universiteit. Als zodanig heeft hij grote invloed uitgeoefend en veel voor de universitaire en andere opvoeding gedaan.
In 1912 was hij Republikeins candidaat voor het vice-president schap der V.S. Hij was ook president van de Carnegie-stichting voor de vrede en verdedigde het Kellogg-Pact.
