in de Angelsaksische wereld bekend Nieuw Testamenticus (Wrexham, Denbighshire 7 Apr. 1884), was van 1912-1915 en 1917-’18 predikant in de Congregationalistische gemeente van Warwick. Hij had klassieken (Magdalen) en theologie (Mansfield) te Oxford en te Berlijn gestudeerd.
Reeds in 1915-1930 was hij hoogleraar te Oxford, van 1930-1935 te Manchester, sedert 1935 te Cambridge. Te Oxford was hij eerst Yates-lecturer voor N.T. Grieks; van 1927-1931 University-lecturer voor studie van het N.T., van 1929-1931 bovendien Grinfield-lecturer voor de LXX. In Manchester was hij van 1930-’35 J. Ryland’s lecturer voor „Biblical criticism and exegesis”, maar tegelijk te Oxford Speaker’s lecturer voor „Biblical studies” (1933- ’37). In deze periode valt zijn werkzaamheid in de V.S., die, hoewel anders gericht, van even opvallende betekenis is geweest als het optreden van de dogmaticus Niebuhr. Zij leidde bijv. tot zijn wellicht meest bekende boek The Parables of the Kingdom (1935). Van bijzondere betekenis is ook zijn Apostolic Preaching and its Developments (1936).Karakteristiek is Dodd’s theorie van wat hij „realized Eschatology” noemt. In wezen is dit iets geheel anders dan P. Althaus’ „axiologische” Eschatologie uit diens eerste periode. Dodd trad in Amerika op als Shafer-lecturer in Yale (1935), als Ingersoll-lecturer in Harvard (1935) en in 1938 als Hewitt-lecturer aan het Episcopal Theol. Seminary te Cambridge (Mass.). In 1935 werd hij beroepen te Cambridge (Engl.) als Norris-Hulse professor of Divinity. Sedert 1936 was hij Fellow of Jesus-College. Hij is lid van de S.N.T.S., een internationaal gezelschap van N.T.ische studiën.
