Amerikaans Christen-filanthroop (Litchfield, Connecticut, 19 Juni 1826 - Campfer, Tirol, 11 Aug. 1890), studeerde theologie aan Yale University en Union Theological Seminary, waarna hij Europa bereisde. Teruggekeerd in het vaderland begon hij zijn belangrijk sociaal werk onder de armen en evangelisatiewerk onder de misdadigen.
