Noordamerikaans plantkundige (Paris, staat New York, i8Nov. 1810-New Cambridge 30 Jan. 1888), sinds 1842 hoogleraar in de Natuurlijke Historie aan het Harvard College te Cambridge in Massachusetts; nam in 1843 deel aan de expedities van Wilkes. Hij schreef o.a. over het Darwinisme, waarvan hij een der belangrijkste voorstanders was in Amerika.
