Engels classicus (Langford-Budville, Somerset, 16 Mei 1847 - Oxford 15 Juni 1921), studeerde te Oxford en werd docent in de Romeinse geschiedenis aan Lincoln College aldaar. Op vele aspecten van het geestelijk, vooral het godsdienstig leven der Romeinen heeft hij in zijn talrijke boeken en zijn Aeneis-interpretaties een nieuw licht laten schijnen.
