Amerikaans anatoom, bioloog en palaeontoloog (Philadelphia 9 Sept. 1823 29 Apr. 1891), behaalde in 1844 zijn medische graad aan de Universiteit van Pennsylvania en werd spoedig bibliothecaris, curator, later voorzitter van de Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Bovendien was hij sedert 1853 hoogleraar in de anatomie aan de Univ. of Pennsylvania en ook nog sedert 1871 hoogleraar in natuurlijke historie aan Swarthmore College.
Zijn Elementary Treatise on Human Anatomy (1861, 1889) was hèt Amerikaanse standaardwerk. Bovendien was hij parasitoloog, protozoöloog, maar vooral palaeontoloog. Hij legde de grondslag van de bloeiende Amerikaanse vertebratenpalaeontologie.
