Engels schrijver Walsall, Staffordshire, 2 Mei 1859 - Londen 14 Juni 1927), was achtereenvolgens kantoorklerk, acteur in de provincies, schoolmeester en privésecretaris. Hij dankt zijn faam hoofdzakelijk aan zijn humoristische romans, bestaande uit een serie komische voorvallen zonder bepaalde intrige, soms onverwachts afgewisseld met tragische of ernstige episoden.
Ofschoon hij een grote populariteit genoot werd slechts zijn autobiografie Paul Kelvin (1902) door de critici goed ontvangen. In zijn ernstige werken toont hij een neiging om sentimentele pathos uit te buiten zoals zijn bekende toneelstuk The passing of the third Floor Back (1907). Zijn talloze andere toneelstukken zijn van geringe betekenis.
