Engels historicus van Schotse afkomst (Faversham, Kent, 21 Dec. 1799 - Athene 26 Jan. 1875), sloot zich in 1823 aan bij lord Byron te Kephallonia en kocht na de onafhankelijkheidsverklaring van Griekenland in 1829 een landgoed in Attica, waar hij een modellandbouwbedrijf wilde inrichten, hetgeen hem mislukte door de ongunstige economische omstandigheden. Daarop hield hij zich te Athene met geschiedkundige studiën bezig.
