Engels economist (Edgeworthstown 8 Febr. 1845 - Oxford 13 Febr. 1926), statisticus en pionier op het gebied der mathematische economie, studeerde te Dublin en werd in 1888 benoemd tot hoogleraar in de economie aan het King’s College te Londen. In 1891 volgde zijn benoeming tot hoogleraar in de economie te Oxford.
Hij publiceerde drie boeken en een groot aantal opstellen en critieken. Hij heeft zijn wetenschappelijk werk niet in één systematisch boek gepubliceerd.
