Engels naturalist, ethnoloog en indoloog (Lower Beech, Cheshire 1 Febr. 1800 - Alderley Grange, Cotswold Hills 23 Mei 1894), verzamelde tijdens zijn werkzaamheid in Brits-Indië (1818-1843), o.m. als resident, een groot aantal handschriften betreffende het Mâhâyana-Boeddhisme, die hij later aan het East India Office schonk. Naast zijn activiteit op philologisch en ethnologisch gebied (184 nummers) heeft hij ook baanbrekend werk verricht op het gebied van de flora van de Himalaja.
