Amerikaans godsdiensthistoricus (Portsmouth, Engeland, 21 Febr. 1902), studeerde te Cambridge (Trinity College), was van 1926 tot 1930 University Lecturer in Classics te Cambridge en is sedert 1930 hoogleraar voor godsdienstgeschiedenis aan de Harvard Universiteit. Sedert 1933 is hij redacteur van de Harvard Theological Review. Vooral bekend is hij door zijn bestudering van de Griekse, Graeco-Egyptische en vroeg-Christelijke godsdiensten.
