Sir, Engels economisch-historicus (Londen 25 Febr. 1860 - Canterbury 23 Juli 1927), werd in 1892 professor aan Harvard University (Cambridge, Mass.), in 1901 hoogleraar te Birmingham. Hij stond in wetenschappelijke opvatting dicht bij de Historische School; zijn voornaamste arbeid betreft de Engelse economische geschiedenis.
