Schots dichter (Paisley, Schotland, 12 Sept. 1856 - Castello Maniaci, Sicilië, 14 Dec. 1905), vaak schrijvend onder het pseudoniem Fiona Macleod, studeerde te Glasgow, en schreef gedichten, vooral balladen, onder Rossetti’s invloed. Later geraakte hij bevangen in het idee van de aangeboren Keltische dichterlijkheid.
Wat hij schreef als Fiona Macleod is vaak mooi en begoochelend van taal, vol zgn. Keltische melancholie, maar blijkt bij herlezing weinig substantieel te zijn.
