Amerikaans economist (Ripley, N.Y., 13 Apr. 1854 - 4 Oct. 1943), was van 1881-1892 hoofd der economische afdeling aan de John Hopkins University te Baltimore, stichter en directeur van het American Bureau for Industr. Research (1904); hij was een der stichters van de American Economie Association en voorzitter van 1899-1901 en eerste voorzitter van de American Association for Labour Legislation (1907-1908).
