Engels classicus (Edinburgh 9 Dec. 1863 - St Andrews 26 Mei 1928), studeerde Grieks, Latijn en Sanskrit te Edinburgh, Parijs, Oxford en St Andrews. Hij was hoogleraar in het Grieks te St Andrews van 1891-1926 en een groot Platokenner.
