Amerikaans schrijfster (Richmond, Virginia, 22 Apr. 1847-21 Nov. 1945), afkomstig uit een aristocratenfamilie van de zuidelijke staten. Haar romans geven de sociale en politieke achtergrond van haar land van 1850 tot heden weer; zij belichtte die zowel op realistische als op satirische wijze.
