Amerikaans criticus en filosoof (Flushing, Long Island, 19 Oct. 1895), studeerde voor werktuigkundig ingenieur, was laboratorium-assistent, bioloog, later redacteur van o.a. The Dial, en redacteur en heroprichter van de Amerikaanse jaarboeken: The American Caravan. Met enige spot merkt hij zelf op dat men meent dat hij architect is, maar hij noemt zichzelf een sociaal filosoof, socialist, maar geen Marxist. Schreef opmerkelijke, boeiende cultuurhistorische studiën en essays over literatuur, politiek, opvoeding, technologie en stedenbouw.
