Engels plantkundige (Catton 5 Febr. 1799 - Acton Green 1 Nov. 1865), zoon van een kweker, was van 1829-1860 professor in de botanie te Londen. Hij werkte zowel op zuiver botanisch gebied (systematiek) als op tuinbouwkundig gebied (beschrijving van cultuurmethoden, enz.), was ook palaeobotanisch werkzaam.
Zeer bekend zijn zijn studiën over orchideeën. Door zijn invloed werden de Kew Gardens beroemd (2: hortus).
