Stevenson), Engelse romancière (Chelsea 29 Sept. 1810 -Holyburne, Hampshire, 12 Nov. 1865), beschreef het leven van de kleine burgerij en de woelige toestanden in verband met het industrialisme op een eenvoudige, realistische wijze, zoals in Mary Barton (1848), Cranford (1853), North and South (1855).
Zeer bevriend met Charlotte Brontë schreef zij een welbekende biografie Life of Charlotte Brontë (1857).BibL: The Moorland Cottage (1850); Ruth (1853); Lois the Witch (1859); Sylvia’s Lovers (1863); Cousin Phillis (1864); Wives and Daughters (1866), onvoltooid.
