Amerikaans kinderpsycholoog (Alma, Wisconsin, 21 Juni 1880), ontving zijn eerste opleiding aan de State Normal School en studeerde wijsbegeerte en medicijnen aan de Clarken Yale-universiteit. Nadat hij ook werkzaam was geweest als schoolpsycholoog werd hij in 1911 directeur van de „Clinic of Child Development” aan de Yale School of Medicine.
In 1915 werd hij professor aan deze school. Gesell is een der meest vooraanstaande wetenschappelijke werkers op het gebied der kinderpsychologie, paediatrie en orthopaedagogiek.
