Sir, Schots geoloog (Edinburgh 28 Dec. 1835 - Haslemere io Nov. 1924), studeerde in Edinburgh en werd in 1855 bij de Geological Survey geplaatst. Hij bewerkte een nieuwe geologische kaart van Schotland en werd in 1867 directeur der Survey of Scotland en in 1871 hoogleraar in de mineralogie en geologie te Edinburgh.
