Newcomb - (Simon), Amerik. sterrekundige, geb. 1835 te Wallace (Nieuw-Schotland); werd 1877 Superintendent of the American Ephemeris and Nautical Almanac, 1884 tevens Prof. in de Wis- en Sterrekunde te Baltimore. Hij overl. 1909 te Washington. N. is een der grootste autoriteiten uit den nieuweren tijd op het gebied der theoretische sterrekunde; de uitkomsten zijner zeer talrijke en hoogst belangrijke onderzoekingen zijn voor een groot deel gepubliceerd in de Astr. Papers of the American Ephemeris (Vol.
I—IX). Tot zijn voornaamste werken behooren, behalve uitvoerige planetentafels : Investigation of the Distance of the Sun ; On the Recurrence of Solar Eclipses (1882); Discussion of Observed Transits of Mercury (1882); Measures of the Velocity of Light (1891); Development of the Perturbative Function . . . (1891, 1895); A new Determination of the Precessional Constant . . . (1905); Researches of the Motion of the Moon (Part I 1878, Part II 1912). Verder schreef hij het beroemde handboek Popular Astronomy (New-York 1878), dat eenige voortreffelijke Duitsche bewerkingen (door Engelmann, Lpzg. 1881, later door Kempf e. a., 5e dr. Lpzg en Berl. 1914) onderging en The Stars. A Study of the Universe (Londen 1902).
