Dyson (frank watson), - Eng. sterrek, geb. 1868 te Ashby, was 1894-1905 chiefassistant aan de sterrewacht te Greenwich, volgde 1905 Copeland op als Astronomer Royal voor Schotland en Directeur der sterrewacht te Edinburgh. In 1910 werd hij Astr. Royal voor Engeland, en Dir. der sterrewacht te Greenwich als opvolger van Christie. Zijn werkzaamheid ligt op het gebied van de zonne-fysika en vooral van de plaatsbepaling en de beweging der vaste sterren.
Hij schreef o.a.: A determination of the Constant of Precession and the Direction of the Solar Motion.... (1905, met W. G. Thackeray); New Reduction of Groombridge's Circumpolar Catalogue (1906, met denz.); Astronomy (Lond. 1910); The Systematic Motion of the Stars (1908, ’09 en ’10); The Position of the Sun's Axis.... (1912 en 1913, met E. W. Maunder); The Distribution in Space of the Stars in Carrington's Circumpolar Catalogue (2 st., 1913); The Proper Motions of the Stars in Carr. Circump. Cat. in relation to their spectral types (1915).
