Engels literair historicus (South Mailing, Essex, 17 Juli 1842 Wadhurst, Sussex, 10 Apr. 1917), werd opgeleid te Harrow en Oxford en was van 1895-1901 professor in de poëzie te Oxford. Hij is vooral bekend om zijn A History of English Poetry in 6 dln (18951910).
