Sir, Engels diplomaat en sinoloog (Londen 16 Juli 1795 - Hollywood 13 Nov. 1890), nam in zijn jeugd deel aan de zending van lord Amherst naar China. Later bekleedde hij belangrijke posities in de koloniale dienst in China, het laatst die van gouverneur van Honkong.
