Engels wijsgeer (Greenock 22 Mrt 1835 - Oxford 1 Nov. 1908), ontving zijn opleiding eerst te Glasgow en later te Oxford. Van 1866-1893 was hij professor in de moraalfilosofie te Glasgow, daarna „master” van Balliol College te Oxford.
Hij behoort evenals zijn broeder John Caird (i820-i8g8) tot de Engelse denkers, die Hegel in Engeland bekend gemaakt hebben. E. Caird is zelf critisch idealist en komt van Kant uit voortredenerend tot een Neo-Hegeliaans standpunt. God is voor hem niet onkenbaar (zoals voor Spencer).
