Engels botanicus (Ripon, Yorkshire, 4 Nov. 1855 - 11 Apr. 1948), studeerde te Cambridge in 1874, daarna onder Sachs te Würzburg in 1877, onder de Bary te Straatsburg in 1879. Hij werd in 1880 lecturer onder T.
H. Huxley te Londen en in 1885 Regiusprofessor te Glasgow (tot 1925).
