Yule (H. Y.), een verdienstelijk Engelsch aardrijkskundige, geboren den lsten Mei 1820 te Inveresk in het graafschap Edinburgh, omhelsde de militaire loopbaan, vertrok reeds vroeg als royal engineer naar Bengalen, nam onder Phaire deel aan den togt naar het Hof van Ava en woont thans te Londen als lid van den Indischen Raad (Council of India at Westminster). bij schreef: „Fortification for the use of officers and students (2de druk, 1854)”, — „Narrative of the mission sent by the government of India to the court of Ava in 1855 (1858)”, — „Mirabilia descripta. The wonders of the East (1863)”, — „Cathay and the way thither, being a collection of mediaeval notices of China (1866, 2 dln)”, — „The book of Ser Marco Polo (1871, 2 dln)”, — „An essay on the geography and history of the regions on the Oxus (1872)”, — en eindelijk talrijke opstellen in verschillende Engelsche tijdschriften.
