Cobbe - (Frances Power), schrijfster, geb. te Dublin 1822, overl. 1904, werd te Brighton opgevoed, legde vroegtijdig groote belangstelling voor theologische vraagstukken aan den dag, genoot haar geestelijke opleiding van Theodore Parker, bereisde daarop Italië en het Oosten, schreef The Cities of the Past (1864) en Italics (1864), trad op als verdedigster van de rechten der vrouw en als bestrijdster der vivisectie, en gaf in 1894 haar Autobiographie in het licht; onder haar overige werken zijn de voornaamste: Friendless Girls, and How to Help Them (1861); Broken Lights: an Inquiry into the Present Condition and Future Prospects of Religious Faith (1864); Studies New and Old (1865); Criminals, Idiots, Women, and Minors'.
