Bartlett (John Russell), Amerik. geschiedschrijver en ethnoloog, 23 Oct. 1815-21 Mei 1886, reisde als lid der commissie tot het vaststellen der grens tusschen de Ver. St. en Mexico van 1850-53 in Texas, Nieuw-Mexico en Californië, waarover hij het werk schreef: Personal narrative of explorations and incidents in Texas, New Mexico, California, Sonora and Chihuahua (1852); voorts gaf hij uit: Dictionary of Americanisms (5de dr. 1884); Records of the colony of Rhode Island (1856-65, 10 dln.). Hij stichtte met A. Gallatin de „American Ethnological Society”.
