Engels classicus (Orillia, Canada, 5 Mei 1883), studeerde te Montreal en te Oxford, werd in 1907 lecturer te Oxford; in 1911 hoogleraar te Montreal; in 1919 te Aberystwyth; sedert 1927 hoogleraar in Grieks te St Andrews. Vooral is hij bekend als godsdiensthistoricus en cultureel anthropoloog.
