Engels wiskundige (Lincoln 1815 - Cork 1864), van 1849 af hoogleraar in de wiskunde te Cork, is bekend door zijn studiën op het gebied van de eindige differenties*, van de invarianten* en van de wiskundige logica. Vooral op dit laatste gebied is zijn werk van doorslaggevende betekenis geweest.
