Shapley - (Harlow), een der meest bekende Amerikaansche sterrekundigen, geb. 1885 te Nashville (Mo.), promoveerde 1913 te Princeton en werd na 8 jaren werkzaam geweest te zijn op Mount Wilson in Californië, reeds in 1921, als opvolger van Pickering, benoemd tot Directeur der beroemde Harvard-sterrewacht bij Boston. Voornaamste werken: On the Nature and Cause of Cepheid Variation (1914); A Study of the Orbits of Eclipsing Binaries (1915); Studies based on the Colors and Magnitudes in Stellar Clusters (1915); Studies of Magnitudes in Star Clusters (1916); On the Age of the Earth (1918).
