Jevons - (William Stanley), Engelsch wijsgeer en staathuishoudkundige, 1835—1882, prof. aan Owen’s College te Manchester, legde 1881 dezen post neer en verdronk een jaar later bij het baden, in de nabijheid van Hastings. Van zijn talrijke geschriften zijn de voornaamste: Pure logic, or the logic of quality apart from quantity (1864), The coal question (Lond. 1865 en 1866), A lecture on trades’ societies (1868), Elementary lessons in Logic (1870) (veel gebruikt leerboek), The theory of political economy (ald., 3de dr. 1888), Money and the mechanism of exchange (8ste dr. 1887), The principles of science (2 dln. 2de dr. 1879), Studies in deductive logic (1880), The state in relation to labour (Lond. 3de dr. 1894) en Methods of social reform and other papers (ald. 1883).
