Baines (edward) - Eng. liberaal staatsman en schrijver, 5 Febr. 1774—3 Aug. 1848, ijverde als lid van het parlement (1834—1841) voor scheiding van kerk en staat, en opheffing der korenwetten; hij schreef geschiedk. werken, als: History of the wars of the French Revolution (1814); History, Directory and Gazetter of the county of York (1822—’23) en id. of Lancashire (4 dln., 2do dr. 1836). Ook regeerde hij sinds 1801 de Leeds Mercury. Zijn zoon, Edward B., 1800—1890, zat 1859—’74 in het Lagerhuis voor Leeds; hij schreef History of the cotton manufacture in Great Britain (1835) en The woolen manufacture of England.
