Amerikaans filmacteur, *20.5.1908 Indiana (Pennsylvanië). Stewart speelde vanaf 1932 toneel, maar kreeg in 1935 een contract bij de filmmaatschappij Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
In 1939–40 speelde hij in Mr. Smith goes to Washington en The Philadelphia story. Stewart trad vooral op in westerns, politieen avonturenfilms. Hij werkte vaak samen met regisseurs zoals Alfred Hitchcock en John Ford.
