Wognum

betekenis & definitie

Village, originated in the 11th century as peat extraction. Together with Wadway, Nibbixwoud and Hauwert it got in 1414 from count Willem VI - purely administrative - city rights. A ribbon development formed at the Raadhuisstraat and the Kerkstraat at right angles to it, where the Catholic Church also arose in the 19th century. After the Second World War the village was extended on both sides of the Kerkstraat.
