Van Ewijck lock in Kleine Sluis

betekenis & definitie

This village without a church, located northeast of Kleine Sluis, was founded in 1846. From 1874 it was the berth of the ferry to Wieringen and from 1912 to 1935 the end of the tram to Schagen.

It owes its name to the sea lock (1846) in the Van Ewijcksvaart, named after the then governor of North Holland Mr. D.J. van Ewijck. The sluiswachterswoning (Binnenhaven 1) dates from around 1890. The pumping station Wijdenes Spaans (Van Ewijckvaart 4) was established in 1873 as a steam pumping station and converted around 1915. The transformer house decorated with red tile surround (at Stoomweg 1) dates from around 1925.
