After C.J. van Houten was granted the degreasing of cocoa mass to cocoa powder in 1828, he settled in Weesp in 1850. Only a small part of the new cocoa factory (1887 and 1897) is left over after demolition. On the Hugo de Grootlaan, the monument for C.J. van Houten (1928), established at the 100th anniversary of the factory. After a synthetic production method for vitamin D2 was discovered by Philips in 1927, the N.V. Philips-Van Houten started producing chocolate pastilles with vitamin D2 in Weesp in Weesp. The previously used factory building C.J. van Houtenlaan 36 then formed the basis for a chemical plant (after 1980 part of the Solvay group).
