Valkkoog in Sint Maarten

betekenis & definitie

This small village east of Sint Maarten became religiously independent of Sint Maarten in 1627. The Herv. church (Valkkogerweg 39) is a single-nave early 16th century church, whose tower and choir were demolished in 1839. The present half-built tower with balustrade and constricted spire was erected in 1865 and contains a clock (1635) cast by Jacob Noteman.

The consistory room (north side) was added around 1900. During a restoration in 1984-'85, the church plaster was removed from 1865. The barrel vault and church furniture date back to 1839. The church also contains a pulpit (second quarter of the 18th century) and a door by P.J. Adema built organ (1871). The teachers' home (Valkkogerweg 38, 1871) and the presbytery (Valkkogerweg 37, 1874) are neoclassical in shape.
