Uithoorn

betekenis & definitie

Village, originated at a crossing in the Amstel and originally belonging to the glory Mijdrecht. Around 1498 Uithoorn became an independent dish and in the 17th century it grew into a market place, partly due to its location on the Amstel river and through impoldering in the area (1630-'40).

In 1672 the rampart was laid against the French. This resulted in a ribbon-like extension along the river. After a fire in 1781 the village part 'De Schans' was largely rebuilt. Until 1915 further densification of the buildings took place. In connection with the construction of the Aalsmeer-Nieuwersluis railway line (circa 1915) and the Provincialeweg (N201, 1938), the village on the north side grew slightly. After the Second World War Uithoorn expanded on the north side (districts Thamerdal and Zijdelwaard) and the west side (Legmeer).
